For billions of years,the Earth has been our planet.We leaned how to lin=ve and thrive here and,with our huge numbers,we became the earth most successful life form.But durning the last few hundred years,we have faced a clever enemy:humans!
We are a type of bacteria.Bacteria are tiny living things that are so small,they can only be seen under a microscope.
You may not be able to see us,but you are surrounded by millions of germs.We are everywhere around you-in the air,the water and the soil.
In your body,bacteria elp you to digest,or break down,the food you have eaten into the vitamins and minerals that you need to survive.
Most bacteria are helpful to other living things,such as plants and animals.In the soil,bacteria can break down dead animals and plants,turning them into the chemicals that plants need to live and grow.
Humans have learned to use bacteria to make many useful things,such as yoghurt,cheese,septic tanks,medicines and chemical.
Most bacteria either help you or are harmless-but some of us are very dangerous bacteria that can cause disease and make humans vert ill.These "bad"bacteria are the germ soldiers that we use in our battle to rule planet Earth!

Because we germs are so microscopic in size,for many years humans did not understand why they became sick,or how sickness was spread from one person to another.Although humans learned that they could become ill from eating bad food, drinking unclean water or touching other sick humans,they did not know why. The war against us was impossible to win because oue enemy did not know who or what they ere fighting.
Our secret weapon was our smallness,our invisibility to the human eye.
Without understanding how we spread or where we lived,humans could not come up with proper strategy, or battle plan.to fight us.
Humans have long known about plants that could be used as medicines to cure some disease,but they did not understand how they worked against us.
Often,people who were taken to hospital became even unwell,because doctors did not know that germs were waiting on thier skin,in the air that they breathes,and on their medical instruments.
Our germ soldiers were everywhere,ready to strike!
Then ,one day in 1676,one of our secret grms armies was discovered.A Dutchman called Anthony Van Leeuwenhoek invented a magnifying glass which made things seem bigger than they really were.He looked through his magifying glass at a drop of dirty rainwater.
This dsicovery was vital in the war against us.At last,humans began to understand what theywere fighting.Slowly,humans began to realise that we were everywhere.Finally,they discovered that some kinds of bacteria caused people to become sick.They called us germs.

When goind into battle,we need to find out as much information as possible about the enemy.We need to know who they are,what they look like ,and how they will attack us. As successful germs,we knoew about humans and how to make them sick.Now, they started to know about us and how we infected them.More and more scientists started to study us.Through their research and studies,they found out that we come in three main types.
some of us are round,like tiny grapes.Round bacteria are called coccus bacteria.Sore throats in humans can be caused by coccus bacteria. Other bacteria are rod-shaped.Under a microscope,we look like tiny paper-clips,with rounded ends.Rod-shaped bacteria are called bacillus bacteria.Those of us who are bacillus bacteria can cause serious illnesses like pneumonia,which attacks the humans'lungs and affects their breathing
The third type of bacteria is spiral-shaped,like aorkscrew.Our spiral soldiers are called spirochaeteas.They can live in blood and cause blood poisoning
Luckily,even when the humans found out what we were,they could not stop us.We grow in number incredibly fast,by splitting ourselves in half.One of us turns into two;two two turn into four;four turn into eight,and so on.If there is plenty of food and warmth for us to growin,one bacteria can quickly multiply into millions of bacteria in only few hours.
Unfortunately for you,the human body provides conditions for us to multiply qucikly.
Scientists growbacteria in dishes filled with agar,a felly made from seaweed,so they can study them.
